2017 Acura NSX: The Awesome Moment Two JDM Legends Meet
A Redditor who owns a 2009 Nissan GT-R happened upon a development NSX on his commute.
Count on meetings like this to happen more often now that the 2017 Acura NSX begins production in Ohio this month. According to Redditor /user/EmpireDudewhile on his normal commute down Central/S. West Ohio freeways, he happened upon a Casino White development 2017 Acura NSX.
Not only did he spot the NSX but he happened to sidle up to the American made Supercar in his 2009 Nissan GT-R and took a few photos to capture the awesome moment. Check out the photos below and let us know in the comments what your thoughts on these two JDM legends meeting in real life means to you.

Keen eyes will notice that in the second picture the development driver is giving the GT-R owner a thumbs up in recognition. According to EmpireDude, this potentially could be one of the first times these two cars have met out in the wild. While the GT-R alongside the Corvette were chosen as benchmarks in the NSX’s early development, they were later dropped for the likes of the Ferrari 458 and Porsche 911 GT3.
It’s been a long-time coming for both of these cars. The Nissan GT-R admittedly had a shorter gestation period but we as car enthusiasts, have waited on the NSX for years. Did you know both production concepts were introduced around the same time.?
During the 2007 Tokyo Motor Show a production version of the Nissan GT-R made headlines in Japan. Around that time Acura announced plans to resurrect the NSX nameplate. Two years later the 2009 Nissan GT-R made its debut and we had to wait an additional seven years for the NSX.
But with both cars in production, a 90’s Japanese era super car revival is in full swing and it looks like these two companies are getting their grooves back. It won’t be too long before a new NSX owner takes a rolling shot of a GT-R on the road as well and returns the favor.
How Honda’s Latest SUV Takes a Big Step Toward Self-Driving Cars
The 2017 Acura MDX isn’t all new. But Honda made its suite of assisted-driving systems standard in the revamped MDX, and that’s significant.
THE ACURA MDX GETS A FACELIFT FOR 2017. IT ALSO GETS SOME NEW STANDARD FEATURES, INCLUDING A SUITE OF “ASSISTED DRIVING” SYSTEMS. IMAGE SOURCE: HONDA.
Honda (NYSE:HMC) took the wraps off of its updated 2017 Acura MDX in New York last week. The revamped version of MDX, a “three row” crossover SUV, gets a new nose, a new hybrid version, and a bunch of new technology.
The latter includes this interesting move: Honda will make its latest package of assisted-driving technologies standard on all versions of the MDX starting with the 2017 model.
That may not sound like a big deal. But with this move, Honda is moving one more step closer to a self-driving future. Here’s why.
Standard features that aren’t far from a limited self-driving package
That package of assisted-driving technologies is called AcuraWatch. It builds on the AcuraWatch Plus package that has been a $1,500 option on the MDX.
Of course, it isn’t quite a self-driving package like Mercedes-Benz’s Drive Pilot or Tesla Motors‘(NASDAQ:TSLA) Autopilot, which allow for limited hands-free driving on highways under certain conditions. But if you haven’t bought a new car recently, you might be surprised by just how much automated “assistance” you can get in an SUV that will start around $44,000.
All of these features use radar, an onboard camera, or both. Here’s the list.
- Collision Mitigation Braking System: Uses a forward-facing radar system to scan for objects in front of the car. If it thinks a collision is possible, it signals the driver to brake. If a collision is imminent, it automatically tightens the seatbelts and — again, automatically — slams on the brakes for you. The driver can adjust the system’s sensitivity, but it’s always on.
- Lane Departure Warning:A camera mounted between the windshield and rearview mirror detects the lane markings painted on highways. If it senses that the car is unintentionally drifting out of its lane, it beeps and warns the driver. Works when the car is traveling at highway speeds (between 45 and 90 miles per hour). Can be switched on and off by the driver.
- Forward Collision Warning: Uses the camera to scan for objects in front of the car. If the car is moving faster than 10 miles per hour and the system thinks a collision is possible, it beeps and flashes a warning light. Can be switched on and off by the driver.
- Lane Keeping Assist: If the Lane Departure Warning system detects that the car is wandering out of its lane on the highway, this system automatically vibrates the steering wheel (to alert the driver) and, if the driver doesn’t correct course, the system will automatically steer the car back into its lane. Works when the car is traveling at highway speeds, can be switched on and off by the driver.
- Adaptive Cruise Control with Low Speed Follow:A cruise control system that uses radar to keep the car at a pre-set distance behind the car in front of it. If the vehicle in front slows down or stops, the system alerts the driver and, if necessary, applies the brakes. Can be switched on and off by the driver.
- Road Departure Mitigation:Another system that will automatically apply brakes and steering corrections if it detects that the car is about to wander out of its lane at highway speeds. Unlike the Lane Keeping Assist system, this system automatically intervenes without warning the driver first. Can be switched on and off.
Does all of that add up to self-driving? Not quite, and Honda doesn’t claim that it might. And if you’ve been shopping for similar vehicles recently, those features probably sound ho-hum. But taken together, the new MDX’s functions aren’t too far behind the Tesla and Mercedes-Benz systems.
I think that’s a big deal.
So why is this important?
Simply put, it’s because each of these systems is a building block of the self-driving cars of the near future — and they’re all now standard equipment on an SUV that starts at $44,000, and available on models that cost even less.
“It’s a very big statement on where the technology is going and how democratized it’s becoming,” said Eric Lyman, vice president of strategic insights at TrueCar. Lyman notes that the AcuraWatch system was originally only available on the top-of-the-line version of the MDX. Starting later this year when the 2017 models begin arriving at dealers, it will be standard on all of them.
THE 2017 ACURA MDX GETS A REVAMPED INTERIOR, TOO. IMAGE SOURCE: HONDA.
Even within Honda’s suite of products, these features are already moving further downmarket. They’re all available on Honda’s compact CR-V and midsize Pilot SUVs, too. For now, the Honda-brand SUVs only offer the package on higher-level trims. But still: For a little over $32,000, you can buy a top-of-the-line CR-V Touring that includes all of these same features. And most of Honda’s rivals now offer similar packages.
Long story short: Self-driving cars might still seem futuristic. But even mass-market cars are now available with features that, taken together, get awfully close to limited self-driving functionality. The future is getting a lot closer.

Acura Unveils NSX GT3 Racecar in New York
- Twin turbocharged NSX supercar to campaign in North American competition starting 2017
- NSX slated to undergo homologation this fall as an FIA GT3 class racecar
- Racecar body to be built by the Performance Manufacturing Center in Marysville, Ohio, the exclusive manufacturing home to the all-new Acura NSX supercar; engine to be produced in Anna, Ohio
NEW YORK, NY (Mar. 23, 2016) – Acura took the wraps off a NSX GT3 racecar today at the 2016 New York International Auto Show, announcing its intention to campaign the twin-turbocharged NSX supercar in North America starting in 2017. The NSX is currently undergoing testing and slated for homologation as an FIA GT3 class racecar this fall.
The unveiled Acura NSX GT3 racecar featured custom bodywork and aero components including a large deck wing spoiler, underbody diffuser and enlarged hood vents for efficient engine cooling. The NSX GT3 will be powered by a 3.5-liter, 75-degree, twin turbocharged DOHC V-6 engine using the same design specifications as the engine in the production 2017 Acura NSX, including the block, heads, valvetrain, crankshaft, pistons and dry sump lubrication system. The engine will be paired with a 6-speed, sequential-shift racing gearbox, delivering power to the rear wheels.
The NSX GT3 will utilize the production NSX’s ultra-rigid and lightweight multi-material body with aluminum-intensive space frame, which will be produced by the Performance Manufacturing Center in Ohio, the exclusive manufacturing home for the new Acura NSX. Its twin turbocharged V-6 engine will also be manufactured in Ohio.
Initial development of the NSX GT3 was conducted by the company’s Japan race engineering arm with testing on race circuits in Europe and Japan. Additional development, testing and final homologation to FIA GT3 global racing specifications is currently being undertaken by the company’s North American race engineering group, Honda Performance Development (HPD), in Santa Clarita, California.
“The NSX was designed as a pinnacle expression of Acura Precision Crafted Performance, and we’re looking forward to proving out its ultimate performance capabilities in GT3 racing,” said Art St. Cyr, president of Honda Performance Development. “We’ll be working with the NSX engineering teams in Ohio and Japan to bring our dream of a truly world-class new Acura NSX racecar to fruition.”
The Acura NSX GT3 car will join a rich legacy of Acura sports car racing campaigns and championships, including the 1991, 1992 and 1993 IMSA Camel Lights manufacturer and driver championships, and the 2009 American LeMans manufacturer, driver and team championships in both the LMP1 and LMP2 classes. Acura currently campaigns a pair of TLX GT cars with Real Time Racing in the Pirelli World Challenge.
The production 2017 Acura NSX launches this spring with serial production slated to begin in late April at the Performance Manufacturing Center. Customer order taking commenced on February 25, 2016, with the launch of the NSX online configurator at NSX.Acura.com.

Hear What Our Customers Have to Say
“The Jackson Acura Dealership in Atlanta is more than just a place to buy an Acura — it is a team of employees who work together to make every part of buying or servicing your Acura a truly welcoming experience. These employees make it their business to know their customers personally, and they go out of their way to make you feel as though you are a part of their Acura family. Once you become the proud owner of an Acura from this dealership, the service department’s dedication to you is nothing short of excellence. From the moment that you walk in the door, till the time you drive out, you will be embraced by the highly motivated and competent team at Jackson Acura.”
“I recently purchased an MDX from Chege M. and wanted to send a letter stating how satisfied I was with the entire experience. From the moment we walked on the lot, he was friendly, knowledgeable and truly assisted my wife and I in finding the perfect car. We had originally gone to another Acura store and although the salesperson was nice, there was something different and more professional about CM. After we agreed on the price, I let him know I needed to leave in 10-15 minutes and after talking to the business office and yourself, he courteously let me know it was going to be a 40 minute wait and asked me to leave a check and he would get the extra options put on the car first thing the next morning and asked me when it would be convenient to come sign paperwork and pick up the car. I called him back and set up an appointment and I was in and out in 10 minutes. He was very thorough going over the car options with my wife and was simply a pleasure with which to work.”
“I just wanted to express my deep appreciation to your entire service staff, particularly Mr. Nick Covino and his associated service technicians, for the outstanding service I received. I have received excellent service from Jackson Acura in the past; for instance, Mr. Covino made sure the technician who had previously worked on my car for its 180,000 mile service also was assigned to replace the timing belt. This instance, however, was particularly exceptional. Mr. Covino extemporaneously set aside some service time for me on a busy Friday afternoon in order that I could get a flat tire replaced and periodic oil change, allowing me to get back on the highway as soon as possible. The work was finished in little over an hour with a complimentary car wash and vacuum, which is always appreciated. When I looked in my car’s trunk later that afternoon, I discovered to my surprise that the service technician(s) had not only bolted my mini spare tire back in place in my car’s trunk, but they had thoughtfully replaced the lug wrench and associated other tools inside a pouch to keep them from rattling around. In addition, they were kind enough to glue a piece of foam rubber on the underside of the particle board trunk liner to prevent it from rattling against the metal jack. Both these acts of thoughtfulness were unexpected but very much appreciated!”
“I leased a new MDX from Jackson Acura last week. My buying experience was remarkable. Im not a fan of automobile transactions, but must comment on this encounter as it has been different from my previous experiences. The sales person Mr. Paul Silverman was an excellent listener. He was able to listen clearly to what I was looking for, provided me with several options and most of all did not waste my time. As a busy physician, he recognized my need to get in and get out quickly, with exactly what I was looking for. From my initial internet encounter to the final signing of the lease documents in the business office, my experience was delightful. I am enjoying my car and have had excellent follow up from Jackson Acura since my purchase. I would definitely recommend this dealership to my friends and family.”
“I bought 2 cars from this dealership and the reason is my salesperson Sergei Potapoff. They always treat me right, give me the best service,it’s really pleasure to do business with them. Few times came for service and was really pleased with the way they take care of customers. They have GREAT facility and Great people working there.Already sent few friends to buy a car from Jackson Acura and will recommend to everybody. Great experience.”
“Outstanding and attenative experience from first email contact until I drove off the lot. I worked with C.J. Lombardi and Michael Wiest. Courteous, informative and efficient in the purchase process. Very fair with my trade-in. They even retrived items I left in my trade in after I left and overnighted them to my house!!!”
“Very friendly from the initial phone call. I had read great reviews about this dealership and my experience here was just as I had hoped. Micheal took lots of time to respond to any question or issue we had. I would definitely recommend anyone looking for an Acura to check this place out.”
“Jackson Acura is a great dealership for acura service/maintenance. Rodney Jones (service manager) is awesome…professional, friendly, attentive. He and his service associates ensure that my car is taken care of for whatever reason I may take it there. Jackson Acura has a comfortable waiting area with a television and magazines and complimentary refreshments…I feel relaxed while waiting on my car.”
“I requested quotes from several Acura Dealerships through Edmunds for a 2010 TL and received the lowest quote from Paul at Jackson Acura. I had another dealer lower his quote so that he was less than Jackson Acura and they matched the quote. It was a great experience working with Paul! He was very considerate and takes good care of you. I would definitely recommend them and use them again in the future.”
“Was shopping few Acura dealerships in Atlanta until I met Reggie Potapoff at Jackson Acura and I drove home on new TL. I got everything the best at Jackson Acura, the best experience, the best price, the best value for my trade and the best service. Thanks to Jackson Acura.”
“This was my first visit to this dealer. I was greeted as soon as I pulled up. The write time was very fast. The receptionist offered my friend and I coffee and cake while we waited for my car. My advisor didn’t try to sell me anything I didn’t need. Being a former Service Advisor, I understand the stress and pressure that comes with the job. My advisor showed no signs of stress and was very calm. He really made me feel at ease.”
“My wife had been wanting an Acura for several years. After making the decision to trade my camry for one, she started looking for a dealership outside of Chattanooga Tn. as most if not all of the dealerships here in Chattanooga regardless of the car manufacturer suck. We did go to Pye Acura here in Chattanooga just to test drive a car which was a lot of fun in itself. Their price was a joke and all they did to my car was devalue it. As soon as I let the cat out of the bag that we were going to Jackson Acura the next day the salesman started with some BS story about how the car dealerships in Georgia can manipulate the car faxes to hide things LOL. Anway I called the sales manager at Jackson to let them know we were on our way down and we wanted to buy a car. When we arrived he had placed us with a great salesman in Reggie Hammond. Reggie was great to work with and we had no issues at all other than the fact we had to wait an hour for a couple, who had got their right before us, to figure out they were trying to buy a car they couldnt afford. Once they realized they couldnt buy the car, we were able to close the deal with very little haggling. In the end we wound up getting a 2007 TL loaded out for $3,000 less than the car at Pye in Chattanooga we had looked at. In addition the car at Jackson also had navigation, rear camera, and 15,000 LESS miles than the one in Chattanooga along with a CLEAN CARFAX. I did have an issue that came up that was my fault during the sale for not checking the condition of the tires. I called Rodney the service manager and he said to go and have the tires checked out and let him know what the tread depths registered. After having this done 2 of the 4 tires came in under pre-certified requirements of 6. They agreed to change at least 2 of the tires and I drove back down to the dealership. Once I arrived they looked at the tires and decided to put 4 new tires on the car instead of 2. One of the front tires that was ok tread wise had 3 different types of nails in it and was going to have to be replaced. I offered to pay whatever they thought was fair and they didnt charge me a cent! They also replaced a front grill piece and fixed an issue I had with the carpet. The dealership could have told me to jump in the lake in regards to the tires as I had bought and signed the papers without checking them first but they went above and beyond what I would call service and did what it took to make me happy. I also got a fair amount for trade on my 2007 camry. Needless to say I am pleased with Jackson Acura both on the sale and service of my wife’s TL. I would reccommend this dealership to anyone as to me they are as fair and honest as a dealership can be and you dont find that very often in this industry and in Chattanooga Tn. for sure. If you are within a 3 to 4 hour drive of Roswell Ga. it is worth your time and MONEY to make the trip if you are looking for an Acura. They have a huge selection of both new and used Acura’s and they will fill up your tank with gas for the drive home. Sorry for being so long but I wanted to be as honest and thorough as possible with my experience. Thank you Reggie, Rodney and Jackson Acura!”
“My used car purchase was a very fast and pleasant experience, normally a sales process can take a very long time, but this one was very fast. Staff was very nice and very knowledgable, facilities were one of the nicest around and kept very clean. Would recommed dealer to other people very quickly.”
“My experience was 1st class at Jackson Acura. We shopped quite awhile and always came back to Jackson … NICE people, never pushy. They actually CARE about Customers. I would recommend Jackson Acura without hesitation!”
